Sweet and simple...

I am flattered beyond belief to have Joslyn over at Simple Lovely mention my house (and blog) in today's post. It made my day!
I came across these sweet, simple illustrations from Studio Oat. Each illustration comes with a spiritual, environmental, or motivational message to 'captivate the heart and inspire the soul'. And you can buy them online here.

Scenes from Waimarama...

How was your weekend? We were lucky enough to escape to Waimarama in the Hawkes Bay and stay at the fabulous (and I mean fabulous) Beach House - see pics below.

The weather was sublime - stunningly calm, sunny days and frosty, frosty nights. Great for toasting marshmallows over the fire. And with a view like this from the front deck....

It was hard to leave knowing we'd not be back for sometime....

Ceramics & a weekend away...

Look at these! I'm constantly in awe of the beautiful things people make with ceramics. These are by Artmind (aka Mitsy) who is based in Belgium. Lovely.

We've spirited ourselves away to Waimarama Beach for a quiet weekend. A kind of a calm before the storm of R being away and the mad pre-leaving NZ chaos. We are staying in the most fab house right on the beach and to be honest I could live here permanently, forever. It's pretty much perfect. Here's the view from our 'home for the weekend' - sublime.

One of my favs of the Bay is Pipi's Cafe in Havelock North. They also make the superbly yummy Poesy range of foods, which include sweet touches like little poetry cards in the packages.

Colourful, round & stripey....

It's been a somewhat bewildering and busy few days. Our plans have changed and we will only be in Portland for six months. Although that may change once we're there. Hmmm. So instead of shipping our 'life' we are storing pretty much everything. Not too bad once you get your head around it, and have a chat to the helpful man at the freight company. Onto the colourful, round and stripey - above is an artwork by Julian Dashper, who very sadly passed away late last week. You can see more of Julian's work here. And below are some incredibly lovely wet-felted pebbles by the gorgeous Reya Veltman. Enjoy!

Cool things with lego...

How cute 'n cool are these! Little MP3 Players that look just like Lego bricks, this fab Lego digital camera, and tiny wee Zip Zip memory sticks. With a name like zip zip how can one resist! And yes - they all really work.

A slight change of plan...

Our plans may-be-a-changin' we shall just have to wait and see. Yes we are still Portland bound but perhaps in a more temporary way. When things are clearer I'll let you know. In the meantime I've been wanting post about the Spanish designer Helena Rohner for a while. Helena designs and makes the most elegant jewellry and home-wares using fine wood, semi-precious stones, porcelain and Murano glass. You can read more about Helena and her lovely work here.

Blog lovin'...

I was catching up on my blog reading, and over on Joslyn's beautiful blog Simple Lovely discovered (via Joslyn's guest post) Bliss by the lovely Mrs French. I pretty much fell in love right then and there. I adore Joslyn's girl crush post - especially the pic of Sofia Copolla. That clutch!

Another fab find was Emerson Made - a catalog of beautiful one of a kind hand made pieces. I tell you I had real trouble whittling the pics down to just three. There are so many gorgeous images over there!

A rainy day poem...

A quick post today. I've been in Auckland sorting out visas, and meeting up with R who is back home after three weeks - hooray!

It was raining (!) when we got back to our little city - so I think it's appropriate to post this poem by Hone Tuwhare - enjoy!

Rain

I can hear you
Making small holes
In the silence
Rain

If I were deaf
the pores of my skin
would open to you
and shut

And I
should know you
by the lick of you
if I were blind

the something
special smell of you
when the sun cakes
the ground

the steady
drum-roll sound
you make
when the wind drops

But if I
should not hear
smell or feel or see
you

you would still
define me
disperse me
wash over me
rain

Lovely interiors...

I'm just loving this image from Anna Spiro's home! Anna is the author of the gorgeous Absolutely Beautiful Things, you can read more about Anna here. While we're on interiors I thought I'd share some images from Elle Decor March 2009.

Haute bohemia meets 1920's in interior designer Kristen Buckingham's LA home.

Artist Anne Becker's office in her New York apartment featuring a framed antique ikat textile.

A simple and welcoming kitchen in Bret Ratner's LA house.
And to end with a painting by the incredibly talented (and Portland, OR based) artist Flora S. Bowley.

A bit of fine tuning....

A bit of fine tuning and musing on blog direction has been going on. I've decided to make Elsa May purely about things I love, and musings on life, and keep Turtle & Mu for all our family adventures and whathaveyou. I know it may have been wise to establish this at first but often things need time to germinate and evolve. Lots of lovely posts on the way soon. Have a fab weekend!

Things have been busy...

Things are speeding up as we head towards the big move. I'm still buzzing about Coco avant Chanel and can't wait for it to be released so I can see it again. I just love these images of Audrey Tautou from the May '09 Spanish Vogue.

Coco avant Chanel does a wonderful job of showing Chanel's distaste of the fashion and conventions of the time, and how she revolutionised the fashion industry by going "back to basics", incorporating elegance, class, and originality. So on that note here are some pics from my favourites folder. As Coco Chanel said to Harper's Bazaar in 1923 "Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance."
