Just released is Sir Ken Robinson's 2010 TED talk. Witty and profound Sir Ken 'makes the case for a radical shift from standardized schools to personalized learning -- creating conditions where kids' natural talents can flourish'. Well worth 18 minutes of your time, and if you haven't seen it, his 2006 TED talk was also brilliant. And if you hop over here you can find out more about Sir Ken.

  1. I saw it earlier this week and loved it.

I love the idea that education should be based on an agricultural and not an industrial model... And that it should not be linear - I always thought that when teaching. What about growing sideways and every other direction other than linear? But of course standardized testing does not give room for that. It was very frustrating.

That last line about how every day our children put their dreams beneath our feet - so we should tread softly... I'm all teary-eyed again. So true.

Fantastic speaker on a really important topic. Thanks for sharing here, Annie.

  2. Hooray - I'm pleased you liked it. I find so much of what Ken Robinson says makes perfect sense. I also feel an alignment to Maria Montessori's approach to education, and her belief that each child learns at their own pace and blossoms when allowed to follow their interests. It's interesting to think she made this comment over 50 years ago - "Scientific observation has established that education is not what is given; education is a natural process spontaneously carried out by the human individual, and is acquired not by listening to words but by experiences upon the environment".
